ACHIEVEMENTS

We are proud of the achievements of our school and our pupils. On this page, we celebrate some of our successes.

The International School Award

International School Award

We are delighted to say that we have recently achieved the highly prestigious 'International School Award', managed by the British Council, in recognition of our commitment to bring the wider world into the classroom.

The International School Award celebrates and accredits outstanding practice in the international dimensions of teaching and learning. Fostering an international dimension is at the heart of our curriculum so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens. We now have links with schools in the Gambia, Australia and France.

John Rolfe, Manager of the International School Award at the British Council, said: "Many congratulations to all the schools across the UK who have been successful in the International School Award. We are very grateful to all the schools for their excellent commitment to the enriching, creative and innovative international dimensions of teaching and learning. The fantastic work is vital preparation for all our young people to better understand their place in the world, and support the development of their skills in an increasingly global economy."

The Award is now also available worldwide in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus and Pakistan as part of the British Council Connecting Classrooms programme.

The ISA encourages:

  • An international ethos that is embedded throughout the school.
  • That the majority of pupils within the school are involved in international work.
  • Collaborative curriculum-based international work with a number of partner schools.
  • Curriculum-based work across a range of subjects.
  • Year-round international activity.
  • Involvement of the wider community.

We look forward to continuing to develop our links with schools around the world this year.

Gambia Well Appeal - We did it!

We have just received these pictures from Mae Winterton that show our well has already been completed! These photographs show the well at the start of our project and now it is finished, in February 2010 – what an achievement! We would like to thank everybody for their hard work and generosity. You can see how happy the children at Pallen Fulah are and what a difference you have made to their lives. They tell us the water is very clean and sparkling!

The well being built in January 2010.

Our well is finished for everyone to enjoy!

Although the well is complete, we are hoping to continue to support this school. Money raised from our recent staff quiz night is already helping to build them a kitchen and garden so that the children can grow their own vegetables and enjoy school dinners. Many of our Year 6 children have written and received letters from the children in Gambia.

Artsmark Gold 2009

Basic Skills Quality Mark

We are delighted to announce that the Arts Council England has awarded us the Artsmark Gold Award in recognition of our commitment to, and excellence in music, art, drama and dance education.

Since Artsmark began 9 years ago, almost 10,000 awards have been made, with 1649 schools receiving the award this year.

Alan Davey, Chief Executive of the Arts Council England said:

"Arts Council England is committed to great art for everyone and we believe that the earlier children are creatively inspired, the more likely they are to have a lifelong engagement with art. Artsmark sets the standard for an outstanding arts offer in schools and it's great to see so many new schools attaining the Artsmark this year. The award recognises Clifton Primary School's passion for the arts and belief in the power of creativity".

At Clifton, we dedicate at least 15% of our curricular teaching time to arts education and provide a wide range of extra curricular opportunities for pupils. We also provide opportunities for teachers' professional development and involvement with local artists and arts groups.

Basic Skills Quality Mark

Basic Skills Quality Mark

We achieved the Basic Skills agency Quality Mark on 3 March 2007.

The Quality Mark agency came into school for the day and assessed our school's performance in the teaching of basic skills.

By Basic skills they mean: 'the ability to read, write, and speak in English and use mathematics at a level necessary to function and progress at work and in society in general'.

The Basic Skills award is made up of 10 elements:

  1. A whole school strategy, including an action plan, to improve the performance in basic skills.
  2. An assessment of pupil performance in basic skills in school.
  3. A target for the improvement of the school's performance in basic skills.
  4. Basic skills improvement plans for pupil's underattaining in school.
  5. Regular review of the progress made by each pupil underattaining in basic skills.
  6. A commitment to improving the skills of staff in the school to teach and extend basic skills.
  7. The use of a range of teaching styles to improve basic skills.
  8. The use of appropriate teaching and learning materials to improve basic skills.
  9. The involvement of parents in developing their children's basic skills.
  10. An effective procedure for monitoring the action plan and assessing improvement in the performance in basic skills.

We passed with flying colours confirming all our good practice in developing essential literacy and numeracy skills in all children from Nursery to Year 6.

The award will be due for renewal in 2010.

Healthy Schools

Healthy Schools Award

Clifton Primary school successfully achieved the National Healthy schools award in July 2007.

To achieve the award we as a school had to demonstrate that we could meet set criteria in the following four areas: Personal Social Health Education, Emotional Health and Well- being, Healthy Eating and Physical development.

Many of the extra curricular activities that we offer at Clifton show that we are a Healthy school. We foster an understanding with our pupils about how to follow a Healthy lifestyle. Pupils are consulted at all times, through the school council, to ensure that their views are taken into consideration before decisions are made.

Activemark 2008

Basic Skills Quality Mark

Clifton Primary School have been awarded the Activemark 2008. This is a highly prestigious award that rewards exceptional delivery of the National School Sport Strategy assessed through the annual school sport survey.

We achieved the mark because at least 90% of pupils across the school were doing at least two hours high quality PE and school sport every week.

Special Pupil Achievement - Ballet Dancing Success

Ballet Success - Summer 2009

We are very proud of our Year 3 pupil who after her audition was invited to take part in the Dancetrack programme with Birmingham Royal Ballet. Since then she has gone on to get better and better and staff went to see her perform in the summer term at the Birmingham Hippodrome.

Very recently she was invited to further auditions and has been selected to continue training with the Royal Ballet. Her sister and another child from Year 1 have been selected to take part this year. They are really excited and can't wait to begin.

What talented dancers we have at Clifton Primary School.

Clifton Weekly Awards

At Clifton Primary we celebrate weekly achievements through our special awards and assemblies. One child from every class across the school is picked out by the class teacher each week, for a special achievement which can be a good piece of work or for excellent behaviour.

In Key Stage 1 each child is awarded with a 'leaf' that is added to our 'Achievement Tree' in the KS1 entrance. Learning mentors also choose a 'Top Banana' – a very special award for a child that has shown outstanding behaviour.

In Key Stage 2 award winners are entered into the 'Star of the Week' book and a photograph is added to the special board in the entrance at KS2.

Parents of the chosen children are invited along to the award assemblies in both key stages each week.
