FAMILY LEARNING

At Clifton we run a number of groups which parents can join to support their children at home. If you are interested in joining a parent group or have any ideas for a group you would like to happen please see Mrs Brown in school.

Keeping Up with the Children

Keeping Up with the Children is a course which runs for four weeks for parents where they can find out more about how they can work with their children to improve their learning in Maths and Literacy.

Family Literacy

Family Literacy is currently running with a group of Reception parents and a tutor from Bournville college. Parents spend a day in school once a week, working on their own literacy skills and working with their children. The course runs during the Spring Term.

Strategic Achievement Group (SAG Project)

The SAG project began in November 2008. It was aimed at a group of Arabic children from the Yemen. Our goal was to hold onto the concept of 'personalising' their learning to help them achieve their targets.

Arabic children from the Yemen worked with their parents using a range of exciting and fun extra-curricular activities to raise cultural status; for example cooking traditional Yemeni dishes, sewing and crafts and trips out. This supported both parent and child's learning.

We developed the project further by running parent only sessions developing both spoken and written English skills and pre tutoring activities to increase confidence and ability to support their children at home.

It has been incredibly successful with parents and children, so we have extended the project this year to work with families from Somalia also.

We have shared the success of project with other local schools who are now looking to adopt this model of a way of raising standards and as a way of empowering parents to have the skills and confidence to help their children.

First Aid Course

We offered parents a 6 week programme to gain a St John's Ambulance First Aid Qualification. This qualification will last for two years. The parents have learnt a great deal about burns, bandaging, and poisoning, choking, shock, resuscitation and much more.

The course has helped raise the parents' self-esteem and give them the confidence to take part in more courses.

Promoting Happier Parenting - Parent Course

Mrs Sheldon organised a 6 week course for a group of parents on Promoting Happier Parenting which was run by the Flying Start Team.

The programme had informal sessions which followed a structured programme where they looked at ways for encouraging positive behaviour. Parents were able to discuss, share ideas, look at home /family situations.

At the end of the course parents were presented with certificates.
