Forest School

Forest School
The children really enjoy Forest School

We have had a Forest School at Colmers Farm since 2005.

The concept of a Forest School is quite a new venture in Britain, but has been happening in Scandinavia for many years. The benefits of Forest School are many and varied, from delivering the science curriculum, to raising self-esteem by giving children the responsibility for decision making.

In our modern world, children are protected and cosseted because we care about their safety, but this is sometimes at the expense of self-esteem, confidence, and self-sufficiency. These are the qualities that Forest School sets out to nurture.

Although the ground belongs to us we share the Forest School with Rubery Nursery.

Sessions are always led by one of the trained leaders. Rubery Nursery use the area on Mondays and Tuesdays, whilst we use it with Reception on Wednesdays, Year 1 on Thursdays, and Year 2 on Fridays.

Forest School

These sessions run in all weathers, except high winds because of the danger of falling branches. It is therefore important for children to dress appropriately. Waterproof clothing has been purchased by school, but wellies and old clothing are essential for children to fully access this fantastic resource, without worrying about getting wet or dirty.

The leaders have been assessed as part of a nationally recognised and accredited Advanced Forest School Leadership BTEC course. They have also trained in first-aid, so that there is a qualified first-aider in attendance every session.

We are all very excited about the benefits we are already witnessing as our children develop their self sufficiency, team working and problem solving skills. Plus they have fun, and get more exercise and fresh air into the bargain!

A Typical Forest School Session

Each session begins with the children sitting in the log circle (base camp).

Sometimes we listen for sounds, look for changes, weather, birds and animals. This is always a quiet calm time. Then children are introduced to the treasure box. This contains equipment that the children can use to facilitate their learning. Some items are always there, some are seasonal. New items are discussed and their correct use talked about.

Children are reminded of the rules and then they are able to go away from the base camp to learn in the outdoor environment.
